Mobilkom Austria Group Deploys Oracle for Next-Gen Communications Services

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

To accelerate the creation and deployment of new services, mobilkom Austria group (mag), has deployed Oracle Communications Converged Application Server, formerly named BEA WebLogic SIP Server. With this partnership, mag will look to underpin its IP Multimedia Subsystem (News - Alert) (IMS) services layer and deliver new services to its 16.5 million mobile customers.

In a single application server, Oracle (News - Alert) Communications Converged Application Server provides support for service-oriented architectures, the latest Web standards — such as Java Enterprise Edition 5 (Java EE 5) — and telecommunications protocols like Session Initiation Protocol (News - Alert) (SIP) Servlet 1.1, Java Specification Request (JSR) 289, and IMS.

MAG can now integrate and extend new services across its entire network by making use of Oracle Communications Converged Application Server as part of its open, standards-based IMS services layer. It can also improve existing revenue streams and create new ones by building out revenue-generating applications.

Developed and deployed on Oracle Communications Converged Application Server, one new mag IMS-based service, “mag over IP,” is already in production in Austria, Croatia and Bulgaria. With the help of this service, end users can send and receive voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) calls on their PCs or laptops as though they were using their mobile phones. They can now have greater flexibility in the way they manage incoming and outgoing calls. Allowing one phone number to ring all of an individual user’s mobile and VoIP devices, the new functionality such as IMS-based multi-ring can also be realized.

By making use of the agility and innovation of external developer communities, this partnership also enables mobilkom austria group to quickly bring innovative and uniquely differentiating IMS services to market. Already, by deploying the Oracle Communications Converged Application Server in its IP-based network, the mobile operator has managed to launch innovative services very cost efficiently.

“The trend to converged multimedia services has set in motion a transformation, with the common denominator being open, Internet-based technologies as the underlying foundation,” said  Rainer Huber, senior service architect at mag, in a statement. “Using Oracle Communications Converged Application Server, mobilkom austria group is uniquely positioned to foster innovation in the emerging IMS market, thereby unleashing new revenue streams and improving our customer loyalty by providing a market-leading set of convergent, multimedia services.”

INTERNET TELEPHONY Conference & EXPO West 2008 — the biggest and most comprehensive IP communications event of the year — concluded Thursday in Los Angeles, California. Thousands of attendees flocked to the event for three valuable days of exhibits, conferences and networking opportunities. Mark your calendar now for ITEXPO East 2009, February 2-4, 2009, in sunny Miami, Florida.
