SIP-to-Cellular Gateways from Multi-Tech Enable International Tariff-Free Calls

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

Multi-Tech Systems, a provider of data communications and telecommunications technology, has introduced a new system of international tariff-free mobile phone calls using a Session Initiation Protocol (News - Alert) (SIP)-to-cellular gateway.

The new system makes it possible to route voice calls between cellular GSM and SIP-based VoIP networks. This integration of GSM means further cost reduction on long distance calls. Also, the MultiVoIP GSM ensures enhanced connectivity by providing a backup connection to remote VoIP sites in case of external Internet failure.

By placing MultiVoIP GSM units at all facilities, customers can direct their VoIP traffic over a cellular connection and do not need to route traffic to the public switched telephone network (PSTN) – helping to further maximize the investments they have already made in the data and voice network infrastructure.

Multi-Tech’s new MultiVoIP GSM SIP-to-cellular Gateway (News - Alert), Model MVPGSM-2, consists of two ports for communicating over a SIP-to-cellular connection, and Ethernet interface for connecting to an IP network.

There is a set of routing rules that determine where each call goes. With the help of these rules, a caller in one country can call a cell phone in another country without incurring any international toll charges. These calls can originate or terminate from an IP PBX (News - Alert) handset, PSTN line, or cell phone, the company said.

The SIP-IP network ends of MultiVoIP GSMs are connected at desired locations by using built-in Ethernet interfaces. The cellular interface of each MultiVoIP GSM is connected to a GSM network by one or two user-supplied SIM cards that have been properly provisioned. MultiVoIP GSM can also be used to complete calls over IP PBXs connected to the same IP network.

“MultiVoIP GSM units equipped with GSM cellular service are placed at all your facilities worldwide,” said Bill Chesney, vice president of Sales for Multi-Tech Systems, in a statement. “Then calls can be sent to any of your offices using your Voice over IP network, and sent locally to a cell phone over the GSM network.”

Apart from offering cheap local calling to anywhere in the world, the MultiVoIP GSM unit also offers the security of having backup voice communications if the customer IP network fails.
