iBasis Joins the i3forum

By Vivek Naik, TMCnet Contributor

iBasis has announced that it has signed up on the i3forum as an associate member in a bid to contribute significantly to the forum’s objectives which include: enabling smooth and quick migration of voice, video and multimedia offerings to IP; considering current demands and technicalities of all vendors and carrier networks for making the interconnection transition smooth and compatible; assisting in the selection of international standards for various scenarios and for a wide range of options per solution; evangelizing IP-based brainwaves and creations and contributing development expertise for new projects in areas deemed a priority by the forum.

i3 is crystal clear about its approaches. Its solutions must eventually yield revenue within tight timeframes and its findings are transparent and open for anyone to look at. The forum thinks collectively, but implementations are carried out by those recommending and it standardizes, but does not create standards. It may also consider recommending a new standards concept to appropriate authorities.
Seventy percent of current global VoIP traffic is controlled by i3 members and the forum has said it is willing to coordinate with other groups and agencies such as the GSM Association and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute.
“The i3forum’s goal is to standardize best-practices and regulations for migrating thousands of existing TDM international voice bilaterals to IP interconnects,” said Ajay Joseph, chief technology officer, iBasis (News - Alert).
“With over a decade of work in this realm - encompassing diverse markets, network types and standards development efforts, and as a leading carrier of international voice traffic - we’re eager to add value where we can to help ensure the continued growth and progress of global telecommunications.”
