By Bob Emmerson, TMC European Editor
Helsinki, Finland -- Movial (News - Alert) has announced that Optimus, a Portuguese mobile operator, is PC-enabling all its mobile phone subscriptions through its mass market “Webphone” PC service, which is powered by Movial Communicator PC.
Optimus rolled out its IMS-based communications service branded TAG in Q2 2008. TAG was a mobile subscription service that targeted teenagers and it allowed usage of PC Communicator at a flat rate of 10 Euros (approximately 14 US Dollars) a month.
This development allowed the operator to extend its services to PC users for the first time. The service includes IM, SMS, MMS, email, VoIP, video telephony, voice and video mail.
Optimus Webphone was a huge success and PC usage was beyond expectation. Over 90 percent was Voice and SMS traffic and there was almost no cannibalization.

According to Victor Donselaar, President at Movial, device manufacturers, network equipment vendors and service providers are continuously searching to provide end-users with compelling, converged IP-based services across the mobile and fixed domain. These services need to provide end-users with a great user experience as well as leverage IP and IMS infrastructure investments and provide revenue-generating opportunities.
More than 18 carriers around the world rely on Movial’s products. Donselaar states that the company has the most commercial IP communication deployments and IMS clients in the world. Customers and partners include Orange, Optimus, Telefonica, Texas Instruments, Samsung and Ericsson.
