Actiontec Benefits from Consumer Adoption of VoIP and IPTV

By Erik Linask, Group Editorial Director

Developers of both communications solutions, as well as service providers, have recently begun focusing heavily on the SMB space, because it is a largely untapped, yet rather large market. And it is interested in both saving on costs and gaining the benefits IP Communications has to offer. If there are eight million SMBs in the United States (and that number, of course, can vary, depending on how you define SMB), and there are millions, even tens of millions of SOHOs, there is no question the largest market in terms of number of purchasers is the consumer market.

Indeed, just as in the business world, broadband adoption is on the rise in the consumer space: A recent Parks Associates study claims that residential broadband subscriptions in the United States grew 20% in last year, to more than 50 million households. It also predicted ongoing growth to bring that total to more than half of all U.S. households by next year.

Of course, nobody is foolish enough to try to sell an IP PBX (News - Alert) to consumers; nor are you likely to find conferencing and collaboration software suites being sold at CompUSA. However, with the attention that companies like Skype (News - Alert) receive, and growing numbers of IPTV service providers, the consumer market is quickly becoming a fertile market, especially for triple play services.

By extension, then, manufacturers of consumer IP-based appliances are also seeing steady growth, as evidenced by Actiontec Electronics, which has now shipped it five millionth residential broadband connectivity product — just four months ago, it shipped its four millionth.

The company attributes the surge largely to the proliferation of IPTV (News - Alert) services, which has also prompted Actiontec to expand its IPTV offerings. In fact, Actiontec products support a variety of WAN and LAN distribution standards, including VDSL2, ADSL2+ bonded, MoCA, HomePlug AV, and HPNA3.

A broadband router with MoCa (Multimedia over Coax Alliance) support, which the company introduced last year, has been adopted by Verizon (News - Alert) and is now part of the service provider’s FiOS offering.

Actiontec also offers a line that includes wired and wireless DSL gateways, an all-in-one ADSL modem/router/AP/firewall, DSL modems, as well as VoIP ATAs — all of which have grown in demand with the rise in consumer awareness of IP-based services. Among its VoIP products, Actiontec offers consumers its VoSKY Call Center, which provides Skype connectivity through any telephone, and the VoSkY Chatterbox, an ultra-portable speakerphone, also designed for use with Skype.

Actiontec products are available through its service provider partners, like Verizon, when subscribing to the associated services. Consumers can also find products through various online retailers and retail stores like Best Buy, Frye’s, and Circuit City.
