AuPix Releases New IP-based Desktop Videophone Platform

By Patrick Barnard, Group Managing Editor, TMCnet

AuPix, which makes high-quality business videophones, has released a new videophone platform which is said to deliver better frame rates and improved video quality.

This new platform, which based on Texas Instruments’ (News - Alert) DaVinci technology, represents a blending of DSP performance and SoC integration to deliver high-quality video to the desktop at affordable prices. AuPix claims this platform represents a new “roadmap” for the company and its OEM partners to follow as they roll out new products.

By using TI’s DaVinci technology, AuPix and its partners will be able to bring new videophone systems to market faster - with improved image quality and additional features - plus they’ll be able to tailor these systems to meet each customer’s unique needs.

“Having investigated a number of options and based on our 17 years in this sector, it was clear to us that DaVinci System-on-Chip (SoC) technology enabled us to give our customers an affordable, high-quality, flexible solution within a short development programme,” said Graham Brown, CEO, AuPix, in a press release.

“Texas Instruments is very pleased to be working closely with AuPix who is a leader in this field,” said Pradeep Bardia, worldwide business development manager, TI. “This close collaboration has enabled us to refine our respective value propositions and create an exciting digital media solutions product roadmap that we’re convinced will be very attractive to our mutual customers and service providersWe look forward to continued collaboration with AuPix on the delivery of highly-differentiated IP videophone solutions to the market.”

AuPix’s existing line of video phones run over Ethernet and talk to Cisco gear. They connect via H.323 and support the H.264, H.263+, H.261 video codecs, as well as SIP RFC3261. Audio encoding is supported via G.711, G.722, G.728, G.729. The company basically makes two videophones, each with a 12 inch screen - a desktop model for businesses and more rugged version used for "public" installations. In addition to the videophones, the company also sells a video PBX (News - Alert) which enables companies to connect a network of videophones, which in turn can be connected to the company network, ISDN, PSTN or the Internet. The system interfaces with other telephony systems, offers management and monitoring tools, and is scalable.
