Acme Packet Aids PCCW with Session Border Controllers

By Jyothi Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

PCCW Ltd., a Hong Kong-based integrated wired and wireless communications service provider, has reportedly selected Acme Packet’s Net-Net session border controllers as part of a next-generation network migration plan.

The company’s portfolio includes wireless, wireline, IPTV (News - Alert) and Internet services to business and residential customers. It currently has more than 2.5 million business and residential lines in service and plans to expand its service portfolio using the next-generation network in the future.

According to the sources, PCCW (News - Alert) has deployed Net-Net 4500 SBCs at major access network aggregation points to provide security and maximize the reach of its residential VoIP services.

Hermes Lin, project manager and technical head, NGN project for PCCW said that, the migration to their next-generation network will enable them to deliver compelling IP communication services to their customers.

He said that Acme Packet’s (News - Alert) SBCs are critical to this transformation by enabling rapid interoperability among their multi-vendor network elements and delivering comprehensive security and service assurance features to support their IP communication services today and in the future.

Officials at Acme Packet say their, Net-Net session border controllers provide critical control functions to deliver trusted, first-class interactive communications – voice, video and multimedia sessions – across IP network borders.

Also, Acme Packet’s SIP signaling normalization allows PCCW’s multi-vendor network to smoothly interoperate, maximizing its service reach. Net-SAFE security framework on the other hand, provides protection against DoS/DDoS attacks and overloads, while topology hiding and access control lists keep unauthorized and malicious traffic from disrupting service availability.

Its adaptive hosted NAT traversal cuts the roadblocks to incoming calls created by premise-based NAT devices and firewalls, says the company.

“PCCW is delivering innovative quadruple-play services to millions of customers in Hong Kong,” said Seamus Hourihan (News - Alert), Acme Packet’s vice president of marketing and product management. “Acme Packet’s SBCs play a pivotal role in helping solve the challenges that PCCW faces as the company delivers high-quality IP communication services over its next-generation network.”

As TMCnet reported, Acme Packet was recently in news for signing a distribution partnership agreement with NEC Networks & Systems Integration Corp.
