Convad Introduces DS3, QoS Capabilities

By Amy Tierney, TMCnet Web Editor

A San Jose, Calif.-based national provider of voice and data communications has introduced DS3 service for performance-intensive applications and enterprise connectivity, in addition to higher-bandwidth bonded T1 offerings, helping partners expand their offerings to reach more customers.

Convad Communications Group’s new DS3 service provides Internet access with symmetrical speeds up to 35 Mbps. The company’s DS3 services are available nationwide and are well suited for organizations that need to connect to their headquarters and larger branch office locations. The solution is also ideal for companies hosting or accessing bandwidth-intensive applications, or transmitting large volumes of images, video, or other data, the company said.

Meanwhile, Covad’s (News - Alert) higher-speed bonded T1 offerings provide up to 12.0 Mbps of symmetrical bandwidth to meet small businesses’ and enterprises’ broadband needs.

The solution fits Glowpoint (News - Alert), Inc., a provider of advanced video communications solutions that help organizations communicate with each other over disparate networks and technology platforms, well.

“For advanced applications like our Broadcast Television offering, the need for fast delivery of a high-quality network is critical to our success,” said Tom Schroeder, vice president of operations at Glowpoint, in a statement. “Covad has been, and continues to be, a key component of our success.”

The effort is part of the Convad’s latest phase in a broader network transformation strategy. Covad in February completed a nationwide MPLS deployment and network capacity upgrades that included metro optical rings with up to OC-192, or 10 Gbps capacity.

“Covad is rapidly evolving its network to create an intelligent broadband services platform that partners can use to expand their offerings, reach more customers, and increase revenues,” said Young-Sae Song, vice president of marketing for Covad Wholesale, in a statement. “Covad’s application-aware network capabilities allow our partners to customize network performance for specific applications, like VoIP, video conferencing, and software as a service.”

Telnes, another user, said Covad’s new higher-bandwidth services should help the company address a segment it could not serve previously.

“We are excited to see that Covad is continuing to invest in its network and developing wholesale services that will help us enter new markets and increase revenue,” said Jason Ness, CEO of Telnes, in a statement.

Convad also introduced network-wide Quality of Service capabilities, which give partners more flexibility and control over their end-user offerings. They allow partners to match the appropriate QoS level with their specific application requirements, Covad said. The company offers five levels of broadband QoS. Each has predefined network priority settings, delivery targets and latency levels.

Earlier this year, Convad recently announced the availability of higher-bandwidth access services as part of a broader transformation offering a full suite of access and network services. Covad Wireless services offer businesses T1-class wireless broadband that delivers symmetrical downstream and upstream speeds. By delivering Internet access through a wireless infrastructure, Covad Wireless services provide businesses a powerful alternative to standard T1 services, TMCnet reported.
