Acme Packet, a provider of session border control solutions, announced that its Net-Net session border controllers are deployed by TIGO Bolivia, a unit of mobile operator Millicom (News - Alert) International Cellular S.A.
The company’s Net-Net SBCs will be supporting TIGO Bolivia’s VoIP interconnects for international long distance. The SBC will be also providing security as well as advanced call routing that are required to scale and optimize TIGO Bolivia’s VoIP peering relationships.
In 2005, Millicom International Cellular (News - Alert), a provider of prepaid cellular telephony services in Central and South America, Africa and Asia, launched TIGO Bolivia to deliver mobile services to domestic and international subscribers.
Earlier, TIGO was experiencing surges in traffic due to network congestion from interconnect partners which reduced the completion of subscribers’ international calls. In addition, the company’s media gateways could not deliver the security and control requirements for its VoIP interconnect borders.
With this in mind, TIGO deployed Acme Packet’s (News - Alert) Net-Net SBCs in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, for VoIP interconnects to other service providers for international long distance termination.
In addition, the Acme Packet’s solution will be facilitating TIGO to offer enhanced quality of service for its international long distance calls - by eliminating congestion at its interconnect borders.
In general, a session border controller is a device leveraged by VoIP networks to exert control over the signaling and media streams that are involved in setting up, conducting, and tearing down telephone calls or other interactive media communications.
According to Acme Packet, its Net-Net session border controllers enables interactive communications using voice, video and multimedia sessions across IP network borders. This family of SBCs also secures the infrastructure delivering VoIP and unified communications in enterprise networks and contact centers.
Acme Packet’s Net-Net SBCs have call admission control capabilities, which enhances call quality. It also features flexible routing capabilities, including least-cost routing and routing based on quality measurements. This feature helps in optimizing TIGO’s services while reducing costs.
Additionally, Net-Net SBCs support QoS monitoring and call detail record generation on a per-call and per-interconnect partner basis. This feature offers TIGO with key information, which is helpful for traffic planning as well as settlement.
“Acme Packet provided TIGO with the means to expand and improve our international VoIP interconnects, resulting in better utilization of our network and allowing us to generate more revenue on international traffic,” said Carlos E. Zamorano, Product Manager, International Services for TIGO Bolivia. “With the Net-Net SBCs, we now have better control over the routing and treatment of calls going to or coming from our termination carriers and we are able to apply specific QoS policies to our international traffic.”
