Network traffic across Asia was severely affected by multiple cable cuts August 12, 2009. According to CommsDay International, APCN2 reported an outage at 10:50 a.m. between Taiwan and China. Users in Southeast Asia were affected by the cut.

A separate cable cut was reported APCN2 Segment 7 connecting Hong Kong and Taiwan and on Segment 1 connecting Singapore and Malaysia.

Separately, Pacnet (News - Alert) also reported "double faults" on its pan-Asian EAC system off the coast of Taiwan over the weekend. According to the report, the EAC cable experienced its first cut in the early mornings of 9 August on a segment linking Taiwan and Hong Kong and a second cut on another segment linking the two countries roughly 12 hours later.

Smart Communications in the Philippines also reported "some" impact to its international voice and text services.

Typhoon Morakot, which triggered massive flooding in Taiwan, is the likely cause of the latest APCN2 cut, though that had not been completely and immediately confirmed.

Not since 2006 have so many simultaneous cuts occurred. In 2006 it was an earthquake near Taiwan that caused outages on six cable systems.
