Yankee Group, a Boston-based research firm, recently released a report on content delivery network companies titled, “Anywhere Scorecard: Content Delivery Networks, 2009,” which ranked EdgeCast as the top most CDN contender of the year and the third top most CDN company out of ten companies.
The Anywhere Scorecard ranks products and services in markets impacted by ubiquitous connectivity. The research firm develops Scorecards using an objective and data-driven methodology. It also evaluates and categorizes vendors within ‘Vision and Ability to Transform’ categories, such as capacity, openness, usability, innovation, management, brand reputation, and pricing.
The report provides a prism through which customers can evaluate content delivery network players even during challenging market economics, severe competition and the encroachment of communications service providers in the industry.
The Scorecard places recognized companies in four groups such as front-runners, contenders, competitors, and followers.
The report developed by The Yankee Group (News - Alert) for the year 2009 ranked ten major CDN players. These top ten CDN players in serial order include Akamai, Limelight, EdgeCast, AT&T, Level 3, Highwinds (News - Alert), Mirror Image, Internap, BitGravity, and CDNetworks. Akamai and Limelight were listed as front-runners; EdgeCast, AT&T, Level 3, and Highwinds were listed as contenders; Mirror Image, Internap, and BitGravity (News - Alert) were listed as competitors; and CDNetworks was listed as follower.
Officials at EdgeCast said that this ranking on Scorecard is very significant as it places the company just below the two incumbents and above seven other vendors, including carriers.
James Segil, president of EdgeCast Networks, said, “We can toot our own horn, but the validation that comes when a leader such as Yankee Group - who spent months vigorously analyzing everything a customer should consider - is an exciting boost for us.”
In 2008, EdgeCast Networks was positioned in the top five CDN industry players.
“Last year, we included EdgeCast as a representative example of a large group of small premium CDNs struggling for differentiation,” said David Vorhaus, senior analyst at Yankee Group. “In the intervening year, EdgeCast has succeeded in standing out from that pack while maintaining a strong performance reputation and product portfolio.”
Yankee Group does not endorse any vendor, product or service depicted in the Scorecard. Opinions and information are based on best available resources at the time and are subject to change.
