According to information provided by the company, AT&T’s (News - Alert) Jim Kahan, senior vice president of corporate development, is set to retire on June 30. Having been appointed to that position in 1999, this will mark the end of a four-decade tour with the telecom giant for Kahan.

In his final position with AT&T, Kahan has been responsible for all domestic and international mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, and venture capital investments for AT&T Inc. and its subsidiaries. He reports directly to retiring Chairman and CEO Edward E. Whitacre, Jr.

During his tenure as head of corporate development, Kahan assisted in arranging more than $200 billion in deals that transformed Southwestern Bell into SBC Communications, then finally AT&T, along with absorbing the old AT&T long distance business and BellSouth (News - Alert). In fact, played a significant role in growing the company into the nation’s largest phone company.
Upon Kahan’s retirement, 55-year-old managing director of corporate development Rick Moore, will take over the vice president title. Moore, however, will report to Forrest Miller, AT&T group president.

“Jim Kahan’s terrific industry insight and outstanding leadership through a series of successful mergers have been keys to building the new AT&T,” said Whitacre, who announced his retirement at the company’s recent shareholder meeting.  “We appreciate his untiring commitment to creating value for our shareowners and positioning AT&T very well for the future.”

Randall Stephenson, a longtime AT&T executive who previously served as chief operating officer, will be replacing Whitacre.
