Nokia Siemens Networks (News - Alert) at SUPERCOMM this week is announcing 100gigE capability on its hiT 7300 optical platform for metro and core networks. Support for 100gigE on the 7300 will be generally available on the DWDM solution in the 2011 time frame, Pathmal Gunawardana, head of optical for NSN North America, told TMCnet, noting that the supplier has done 100gbps trials with Verizon (News - Alert).
“We anticipate a tremendous need coming down the pipeline for this technology,” Gunawardana said.
Of course, the need for 100gigE technology has arisen in light of a flurry of new media-rich applications moving on to networks. But while end users want to enjoy new services and the bandwidth to support them, Gunawardana points out that these customers are not willing to pay incrementally for the bandwidth use vs. how much they paid in the past. In fact, he adds, most people don’t even have a handle on their bandwidth usage. That means service providers need to focus not just on delivering more bandwidth, but to optimize their networks to make the best use of that bandwidth, he noted, adding that NSN offers the tools to enable that.
He added that NSN will be one of the earliest to market with 100gigE and that its biggest differentiator in this space is that its 100gigE will be on same 50ghz of spectrum that people use for 10gig or 40gig today.
Also at SUPERCOMM this week, NSN will showcase the IP over DWDM solution it’s delivering in cooperation with Juniper Networks (News - Alert). The two companies announced their plans around that earlier this year.
