ADTRAN's Sealed DSLAM Helps Telcos Turn Up the Bandwidth

By Paula Bernier, Executive Editor, TMC

ADTRAN (News - Alert) Inc. today unveiled a sealed DSLAM designed to help service providers increase bandwidth to select areas quickly and affordably. The Total Access 1148A-DMT (News - Alert) will enable telcos to meet consumer hunger for more bandwidth to support rich media applications, and potentially better position those same providers to compete with cable operators.

The TA1148A-DMT is a 48 subscriber port FTTN/DSL product with a copper uplink option. Up to eight copper pairs can be bonded for 100mbps-plus backhaul, or transport can be handled via a traditional gigabit Ethernet fiber uplink.

On the subscriber side the box employs Ethernet in the First Mile technology to bond multiple ADSL2+ pairs. That enables telcos to deliver consumer services at rates up to 20mbps.

Robert Conger, a product manager for the line at ADTRAN, says this is the first product of its kind in the marketplace. Because the TA1148A-DMT is a sealed unit, there’s no cabinet to deploy and no other site construction considerations, he says, and that means faster time-to-market and less expense for the service provider. He adds that this is an integrated solution with a single management system.

In addition to allowing a telco to subdivide a serving area and reach a certain customer set with higher bandwidth services, Conger says the TA1148A-DMT also can be used to aggregate traffic from sister devices.

The TA1148A-DMT is just the latest addition to the Total Access 1100 family of standalone, sealed DSL products, the first of which were introduced about eight years ago.
