PMC-Sierra, Entropic Collaborate to Enhance Broadband Connectivity in MSO Fiber Deployments

By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributor

PMC-Sierra, Inc., which specializes in Internet semiconductor solutions, and Entropic Communications, Inc. reportedly announced a joint effort to develop an innovative and cost-effective solution for the delivery of >100 Mbps broadband connectivity in MSO fiber deployments.

PMC-Sierra (News - Alert) is an infrastructure semiconductor solution provider offering semiconductor solutions for enterprise storage, Wide Area Network infrastructure, Fiber to the Home, and laser printer/SMB NAS markets.

The two companies plan to demonstrate the combined concept during an upcoming trade show in Denver Oct. 28-30.

With growth in demand for greater bandwidth, cable operators are moving toward PON technologies for deploying fiber deeper into their networks. The combination of PMC-Sierra’s high-speed standard-compliant EPON and 10G EPON solutions and Entropic’s (News - Alert) Access solution will help both companies extend the reach of their networks using the existing coax infrastructure. This allows MSOs to deliver high-speed connectivity to single-family houses as well as multiple-dwelling units.

Entropic’s Access technology is deployed widely in the growing Ethernet over Coax or EoC implementations. This enables bidirectional communications over coax for MSOs. Entropic’s EoC featuring a seamless fiber to coax solution using PMC-Sierra’s PAS8011 10G EPON OLT will be demonstrated, said company sources.

This deployment serves up to 32 ONUs and terminates to Entropic’s Access network controller for supporting 63 homes with >100 Mbps of aggregate throughput over the existing coaxial network.

“Our Broadband Access solution offers a unique and cost-effective way to extend the reach of existing fiber over coax cable,” said Vinay Gokhale, senior vice president, marketing and business development for Entropic. “By working with partners such as PMC-Sierra, we are able to further our mission to bring high-speed access and connected home entertainment networking solutions to the worldwide market.”

Raphael Sankar, vice president and co-general manager of PMC-Sierra’s FTTH division said that the company is trying to enhance its offerings as a FTTH silicon solution provider catering to the EPON, GPON, 10G EPON and 10G GPON markets.

Entropic is a fabless semiconductor company that facilitates connected home networking and entertainment. It provides silicon and software technologies to cable, telecom and satellite service providers in addition to OEMs and consumer electronic manufacturers.
