ST-Ericsson, a provider of wireless platforms and semiconductors, has announced that HTC Corp. is leveraging its TD-SCDMA technology in China for future smartphones.
HTC (News - Alert) and ST-Ericsson expect to give people in China a wide selection of high-speed broadband handsets by developing both advanced mobile handsets.
“ST-Ericsson’s (News - Alert) TD-SCDMA technology is enabling us to develop key smartphones for the Chinese markets,” said Fred Liu, chief operating officer at HTC Corp., adding that smartphone adoption in China is “skyrocketing” and the company is able to deliver a strong product line-up.
The companies plan to develop mobile handsets that are capable of providing users with the “ultimate multimedia mobile experience, and low- cost models.” In December, the first phone developed through the collaboration was introduced.
The handsets being developed by the companies are based on ST- Ericsson’s new and existing platforms, such as the M7210. This platform is capable of dual-mode automatic handover between TD-HSPA and EDGE, and has been optimized to run multimedia-rich smartphone applications.
“This new collaboration with HTC broadens the range of our partnerships with top manufacturers at the forefront of innovation,” said Pascal Langlois, chief sales and marketing Officer at ST-Ericsson.
Calling HTC a leading adopter of open operating systems, Langlois said that ST-Ericsson is looking forward to further supporting HTC’s efforts in China.
This week, Geneva, Switzerland-based ST-Ericsson also announced that it developed a platform that supports Android (News - Alert), which manufacturers could use to produce smartphones. A highly-integrated and power-efficient platform, the U6715 promises to “significantly” broaden the smartphone segment, said Ericsson reps.
In December, Nokia (News - Alert), a mobile telecommunications and mobile devices manufacturing company, entered into a long-run business relationship with ST-Ericsson to offer TD-SCDMA technology and solutions in China.
