SOMA, ArrayComm Enhance Mobile WiMAX Network Economics

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributor

In a joint development effort, SOMA Networks will integrate ArrayComm’s (News - Alert) multi-antenna signal processing (MAS) software, including support of MIMO, AAS and combined MIMO/AAS modes, into SOMA’s FlexMAX Mobile WiMAX System.

Mobile WiMAX (News - Alert) network operators can use the combination of ArrayComm’s adaptive antenna software with SOMA’s fully converged, all-IP broadband wireless access solution to enjoy the greatest possible cell range and coverage, increased spectral efficiencies and greater network capacity.

One of the key differentiators for Mobile WiMAX systems, MAS technology enables operators who deploy equipment based on the 802.16e-2005 standard to serve hard to reach, previously unwired, and underserved broadband markets. MAS provides WiMAX systems with a next generation competitive advantage that enables the operators to easily serve the broadband to the home (BTTH) markets.

“SOMA Networks (News - Alert) is committed to ensuring the FlexMAX Mobile WiMAX System integrates the best elements to meet the demanding performance requirements for successful BTTH market deployments,” said Tom Flak, SVP of Operations at SOMA Networks in a statement to the press.

He continued: “As a world-class, leading source of advanced antenna technologies, it was a natural choice for us to work with ArrayComm. By leveraging the best technology from the WiMAX ecosystem, we are able to optimize the performance of SOMA’s products and offer our carrier customers the greatest benefits in a single system.”

ArrayComm’s MAS software greatly enhances SOMA’s specialization in macro-cellular coverage. By incorporating adaptive software the FlexMAX System can dynamically select the best multi-antenna processing technique, on a user-by-user basis to maximize overall system performance. This result in delivery of two to four times more coverage and capacity, overall reduction in the number of base stations required, and optimal performance in a variety of environments.

A combination of all these factors can vastly improve the OPEX (News - Alert) and CAPEX bottom line and ensure the most favorable business case for WiMAX services providers.

“While WiMAX Forum baseline profiles and certification ‘waves’ are a good start, there are significant performance gains (from 50- to 200-percent improvements) that can be achieved by leveraging more advanced software,” said ArrayComm’s President, Steve Sifferman.

“By incorporating adaptive interference cancellation techniques and control channel link budget improvements, ArrayComm technology can alleviate these limitations and increase the range of cell coverage,” he added.

Sifferman believes the FlexMAX System provides an ideal platform for cutting-edge MAS technology, and SOMA’s decision to incorporate the software supports an overall market leading strategy to deliver the best business case for network operators.

ArrayComm LLC, a Ygomi Group company, provides multi-antenna signal processing for wireless systems.

SOMA Networks is a provider of Mobile WiMAX solutions.
