Report: Facebook Has More Visitors Than Google
By Marisa Torrieri, TMCnet Editor
After three years of commanding the most Internet visits, Google (News - Alert) has been gently pushed off its number one spot.
A report released Monday by Internet research company Hitwise reveals that Facebook (News - Alert) passed Google as the most visited Web site in the United States last week.
That’s right! Facebook just barely beat out the Internet search giant, according to reports, as visits to the #1 social-networking site accounted for 7.07 percent of all Web visits. Visits to Google accounted for 7.03 percent of visits – making this the first time since September 2007 (when it unseated MySpace (News - Alert)) that Google was not in the top spot.
Matt Tatham, director of media relations at Hitwise, reportedly attributes Facebook’s success to the fact that the site makes it easy to share information and content with friends.
Google doesn’t do as good a job of this, though it’s not for lack of trying on Google’s part. The Mountain View, Calif., company recently added a Google new Gmail module that incorporates status updates from people that a Gmail user chooses to connect with, plus content from YouTube (News - Alert), Picasa and other sources.
