Sonus Networks Updates Network Border Switch for Secure VoIP

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributor

Sonus Networks (News - Alert), Inc., a supplier of service provider Voice over IP (VoIP) infrastructure solutions, has released the latest version of its Network Border Switch (NBS (News - Alert)) developed to offer secure connectivity between enterprises and operators, as well as between different operators' networks.

In conjunction with Sonus' trunking, access or wireless solutions, the solution enables network operators to increase their network security for all voice communications.

"Adoption of IP technology began in the core of major networks and is working its way out to the edge, requiring a robust peering and security solution that leverages the advantages of IP to interconnect with other network operators," said Vikram Saksena, Sonus’ chief technology officer, in a statement. "Like the Sonus platform as a whole, the NBS is unique in the market in terms of its ability to scale effectively without sacrificing quality and reliability, which is absolutely essential to maintaining the integrity of the network."

According to Sonus, the switch’s architecture allows connectivity between different IP networks to be improved. Additionally, network operators can also benefit from enhanced security, control and visibility over those accessing their networks. With stringent regulations set by the government on security, it has become essential for operators to be able to meet evolving regulatory standards.

This switch has been designed specifically for network operators that deploy IP-voice networks at their borders. It meets stringent government regulations, like Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., (CALEA(R)), Government Emergency Telecommunications Service (GETS) and Enhanced 911 or E911.

The Sonus Network Border Switch is available on both the GSX 9000 and GSX 4000 platforms. In addition to this, the switch incorporates new features that support direct media, Denial of Service (DoS) protection for access networks and consumer VoIP deployments, advanced encryption support for call set-up, and additional Secure Real Time Protocol (RTP) to protect call content. The platform has also been upgraded to address the advanced management and Operational System Support (OSS) functionality.
