Take the A-Z Tour of Business VoIP Terminology with Aptela

By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Aptela’s Jen Robinson has taken a useful and light-hearted approach to an interesting challenge. After covering four months of common fussiness with VoIP terms, she looked at 10 Aptela (News - Alert)-specific VoIP terms in A-Z fashion.

“Hopefully this will help you learn a little more about VoIP and what Aptela has to offer,” she wrote, “whether you are a current customer or not.” Below are some excerpts:

Anywhere Menu: While on a call, access call management features such as transfer, call recording and send to voicemail. There is no difference in functionality whether you are at your desk or on a mobile phone.

Basic Telephony Features: Includes all the basic phone functions, including caller ID, call forwarding, call hold, call transfer, call waiting, 7-digit dialing for local numbers, 3-way calling, redial, do not disturb and speed dial.

Call Blast: Allows you to have incoming calls ring multiple lines simultaneously.

Department: Set up a sub-group of extensions to handle incoming calls. Choose from multiple call handling options, call screening and audio announcements options. Departments can be referenced from the Auto Attendant menu or directly with a dedicated phone number-or both. Also known as "Hunt Group.”

Extension Dialing: Quick-dials your local emergency operator for assistance.

Find Me/Follow Me (Personal Locator): Forward calls to one or more other phone numbers to ensure you never miss a call. You can ring multiple numbers simultaneously or in a user-defined sequence.

Holiday Schedule: Enables a group administrator to create and designate business holidays with unique schedules greetings for your designated company holidays.

Toll-free Numbers: Add toll-free numbers to make it even easier for customers to contact you. Toll-free numbers can be configured to forward other toll-free calls to your auto attendant.

User Dashboard: This Web-based dashboard presents all key features at your fingertips: missed phone, voicemail and fax messages, active call display, Find Me management and access to the company phone book and personal contacts for click-to-call functionality. Available from any PC or laptop with an Internet connection.
