Altru Health System Deploys SonicWALL Next-Generation Firewalls

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

Looking to better secure its 20 office locations across North Dakota and Minnesota, Altru Health System has successfully deployed two SonicWALL (News - Alert) E-Class NSA E6500 and two NSA E5500 Next-Generation Firewalls in High Availability mode, as well as TZ Series firewalls.

In the evaluation and selection of the solution, Altru engaged the assistance and counsel of High Point Networks. In combination with the Aventail (News - Alert) SRA EX7000, they deployed E-Class NSA E6500 and E5500 Next-Generation Firewalls. Necessary to secure both VPN access and traffic, this created a SonicWALL Clean VPN that delivers the critical dual protection. Throughout its wide area network, Altru's remote and mobile physicians as well as its staff now benefit from secure and HIPAA compliant access to patient information, the company stated in a press release.

“The movement to EMR drives a need for us to provide access to many different types of information, from many different places," said Matt Schumacher, manager of technical support at Altru Health System. “We really wanted to simplify management and consolidate different types of remote access products into one platform. SonicWALL is a lot easier to configure than Fortinet (News - Alert) and any of the other products we considered.”

Because they have optimized the delivery of clinical information and applications to their remote branches and home users, Altru has now become more successful. Enabling critical business initiatives such as the EMR upgrade and its migration to Voice over IP (VoIP), this saves time and makes care for patients more effective. Also, to support telemedicine initiatives for outpatients and remote clinics, the healthcare system is currently converting its PBX (News - Alert) telephone systems to VoIP as well as incorporating videoconferencing.

Recently, the company announced that Northern Gateway (News - Alert) Public Schools' Regional Division No. 10 has standardized on SonicWALL's Continuous Data Protection (CDP) solution for backup and disaster recovery. The Northern Gateway district services K-12 schools in the Canadian province of Alberta. After a comprehensive review of available solutions, Northern Gateway selected SonicWALL to protect vital school records and meet increasing regulatory mandates with a comprehensive and streamlined backup and disaster recovery solution. The SonicWALL CDP 6.0 solution provides disaster recovery protection.
