Ascom Provides Wireless Communication to Karmanos Cancer Institute

Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit, Michigan, has announced it selected Ascom (News - Alert), a provider of on-site wireless communications.
Ascom offers solutions for hospitals, manufacturing, retail and hotels and has more than 70,000 systems installed at major companies all over the world. Solutions are based on VoWiFi, IP-DECT (News - Alert), DECT, Nurse Call and paging technologies, smartly integrated into existing enterprise systems.
Ascom officials claim that the cancer center chose its VoWiFi FreeNET solution for its value and functionality.
The Ascom FreeNET standards-based solution consists of market-specific VoWiFi portable handsets with direct SIP connection or an optional VoIP Gateway (News - Alert) for integration to an existing circuit-switched PBX.
The Ascom UNITE Messaging Suite is a robust messaging integration solution consisting of small network appliances with Ascom software applications utilizing a Linux kernel – providing reliability and stability.
Karmanos’ Karen Goldman chief nursing officer said that the Institute established the wireless network service to enhance the staffs’ delivery of care to patients, as well as for the convenience of patients and guests.
“The addition of Ascom VoWiFi technology maximizes our investment and facilitates instant communications between all parties involved in patient care, “Goldman said.
In addition to all inpatient units Ascom is now in Karmanos’ outpatient clinics and its pharmacy as well.
Karmanos is one of 41 National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the United States. Caring for more than 6,000 new patients annually on a budget of $216 million and conducting more than 700 cancer-specific scientific investigation programs and clinical trials, the Karmanos Cancer Center is among the nation’s top cancer centers.
Ascom recently entered into collaboration with Ekahau on a new WiFi (News - Alert) positioning solution.
Ekahau’s location-based services (Ekahau RTLS) combined with the Ascom i75 VoWiFi handset creates a reliable means of locating people in emergency situations.
