SIPfoundry Releases New Unified Communication Solution Targeted At Medium Businesses

By Carolyn J Dawson, TMCnet Contributor

The charitable Open Source community SIPfoundry (News - Alert) has announced the latest significant launch of its open source enterprise IP PBX unified communications solution, sipXecs.

This shareware solution provides a breath of fresh air in a market that is dominated by traditional pay-per-use products from the stables of telecom giants such as Cisco, Avaya, Shoretel and others. In today’s recessionary economy, when all IT administrators are pulling their purse strings tight when faced with key decisions to make fresh additions or upgrade existing software, the sipXecs IP PBX (News - Alert) solution provides a viable alternative that is affordable, completely open, and compatible and standards based.
The inbuilt dynamism of the sipXecs UC solution enables it to provide its extensive unified environment to workforce in any enterprise along with working in tandem with their respective associates and clients. The software also binds smoothly with other vital solutions available in the market today, like Microsoft Outlook, Active Directory, and Exchange, IBM (News - Alert) Lotus and Sametime, Counterpath Bria and the software loaded on many prominent softphones today. The sipXecs UC solution is also feature-rich, combining such invaluable functionalities as unified messaging, click-to-call, find-me/follow-me, personal auto-attendant, personal conferencing and assistance for high definition audio, and instant, live information exchange for voice, video, instant messaging, conferencing and telepresence.
The latest version release 4.0 brings on board vital new features like SIP trunking, Web Services, fresh cohesive applications and cluster management which is primarily aimed at cutting down cost of maintaining for the enterprise.SIP trunking allows enterprises entry to SIP services from prominent Internet Service Providers like BT, ATT, Bandtel, Bandwidth.com, Cbeyond and Skype (News - Alert). The pathway for the SIP trunking is integrated onto the sipXecs IP PBX platform instead of its predecessor the Session Border Controllers. This gives all the requisite Network Address Translation features at a very low operating and initial acquisition cost.
With cluster management, enterprises can install a centrally administered sipXecs IP PBX system combining twin benefits of scale and idleness. This makes it ideal for not only the SMB segment but also the mid-enterprise and branch office segment which has between 150 and 10000 users.
Web Services enable enterprises to better consolidate their business processes. It includes a fresh conferencing offering, smooth offsite workforce assistance, click-to-call features, better monitoring and notable improvements in the plug & play support for external party applications like softphones and gateways.

Nortel is currently providing a commercial variant of this product, branded as Software Communication System (SCS (News - Alert)), with comprehensive commercial assistance from Nortel, Dell, IBM and other vendors globally. The solution has found widespread acceptance in the market and many reputed software developers have collaborated on the project over the past one year
