OnRelay Inks Deal with Sony Ericsson for Cellular FMC

By Jayashree Adkoli, TMCnet Contributor

Cellular Fixed Mobile Convergence (News - Alert) (FMC) provider OnRelay announced that it is collaborating with Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, in order to implement company’s Mobile PBX software (MBX) on the Sony Ericsson (News - Alert) XPERIA X1 mobile phones.

OnRelay’s Mobile PBX (News - Alert) software (MBX) is a cellular fixed mobile convergence (FMC) solution that enables companies to replace their IP desk phones with mobile phones. This helps in cutting deployment expenses and capital costs by up to 80 percent. It also offers business users with a complete office phone extension on their mobile phone.

Based on OnRelay’s patented Telephony Internetworking Protocol (TINP), this client-server software solution works over any public global mobile network such as 3G/GSM, EVDO, Low Power GSM.

OnRelay’s MBX does not require Wi-Fi or DTMF signaling or any extra voice circuit hardware. When MBX is integrated with open source PBX such as sipXecs, OnRelay offers businesses with a complete fixed and mobile telephony system that is cost-effective. OnRelay’s partners can offer MBX as Software as a Service (SaaS (News - Alert)), thereby providing significant cost savings to the customers.

Leveraging legacy infrastructure, the MBX offers two deployment options: Integrated MBX – integrates behind the firewall to existing PBXs form Cisco, Avaya (News - Alert), Nortel and Siemens; and Unified MBX, which is an open source bundled platform that can be hosted or on-premise based. This distributed, scalable design of MBX supports global, multi-site installations, says company. ??

“Sony Ericsson is committed to supporting the best enterprise solutions for X1 to meet the business needs of our users,” said Alan Giles, head of enterprise for Sony Ericsson in Western Europe.  “We are excited by the proposition of OnRelay’s Mobile PBX software.  The level of FMC it achieves can for the first time allow multinational customers to replace desk phones with Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 mobile phones.”

Sony Ericsson’s XPERIA X1 sliding touch screen phone features 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, MicroSD, QWERTY keyboard, digital camera, handwriting recognition and more.

Marie Wold, president of OnRelay, said in a release: “The XPERIA X1 excels in offering enterprise users an impressive feature set within compelling form factor and design.  The usability of OnRelay’s MBX client is complimented by the strength of the X1’s sheer processing power.  Together we provide business users with a world-leading enterprise mobility offering.”

Details of the OnRelay collaboration will be released at the Sony Ericsson Volvo Ocean Race VIP Event Stockholm.
