Advantech Introduces Four Core CPCI Blade

By Vivek Naik, TMCnet Contributor

Advantech Company announced the introduction of the MIC-3393 quad core Intel Zeon Blade, which is a Compact Peripheral Component Interconnect that guarantees an enhanced and longer product life cycle, and significantly lowers the total cost of ownership by drastically reducing, if not wiping out, the need for costly system architecture redesigns.

“The board’s features and adaptability make it a compelling upgrade option in telecom and networking applications such as high end IP PBX’s, soft switches and gateways as well as in network testing, monitoring and CTI (News - Alert),” said Peter Marek, technical director of the blade computing division for Advantech, in a statement.

Company officials said that its development engineers used a modular approach while designing the CompactCPI’s architecture and layout, and in-built Input and Output options that can be scaled as per customer’s growing requirements along with a broad spectrum of setup variables that cater to, and make the module interoperable with, a range of associated global technologies.
The company said that it has a single slot version that provides server level performance and dual core Intel (News - Alert) Xeon processing power that can be expanded to a dual slot version for the best cooling solution in the quad core segment.
A dual PCI Mezzanine Card , or fabric switched Mezzanine Card extension module provides additional I/O with front panel connectivity, the company said, and can be interchanged with a storage based extension module that uses Intel Storage Matrix Technology and Intel Rapid recovery on two 2.5 inch Serial Advanced Technology Attachment hard disks in Redundant Array of Inexpensive, or Independent, Disks 0 or 1 configurations.
“Other market segments where customers will appreciate the technology are rugged computing and industrial grade workstations. In multiprocessor configurations, the MIC-3393 will allow cost saving through a reduced set of blades or differentiation through a higher performance offering,” Marek said.

The Intel 82574L and Intel 82566 controllers used provide edge Giga bit Ethernet performance, and the first one supports extended message signaled interrupts allowing individual network flows to interrupt different CPU cores, said officials. The interrupts can then be directed to virtual machines, thereby improving interrupt load distribution.
The RIO-3311 module has a large scale integration 1064e SAS (News - Alert) controller offering mixed SATA, SAS generation 2 device configurations, and supports external port expanders for storage purposes. It is able to change or add components that interact with the operating system without shutting it down and each port can be used internally or externally to help system design. For example, the company said that internal crossover cables between SAS drives and RIO-3311 pairs allow for fully redundant SAS topologies in HA environments or in cluster controller redundancy.
The company said that the module provides XGI Z11 PCIe based server graphics supporting 1600 x 1200 Dots Per Inch (DPI), 64K hi-color via a VGA connector with extra COM and USB ports at the rear I/O module, to provide an enhanced graphic experience.
The new release also has soldered Error Correcting Code memory for the best cooling and reliability offerings, and additional, optional memory expansion via two Small Outline Dual In-line Memory Module slots, claim official sources.
Advantech (News - Alert) said that it has used Avocent’s Intelligent Platform Management Interface firmware and an on board Baseboard Management Controller to monitor and manage the system and its overall continuous functioning, and also to manage the interfaces between the system management software and platform hardware.
The company said that the new CPCI blade has redundant flash support for failsafe operation, TPM support, and a wide range of boot options from storage and LAN thanks to an improved American Megatrends Incorporated Basic Input and Output System. It also supports Microsoft’s Windows XP 64-bit, Windows Server 2003 to 2008, and various Open Source Linux versions.
