Symmetricom Unveils Industry-First End-to-End Management for IEEE 1588 PTP Portfolio

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

Symmetricom has reportedly unveiled the industry’s first comprehensive IEEE (News - Alert) 1588 Precision Time Protocol end-to-end synchronization management platform. Named TimePictra 4.0, this platform offers improved network visibility and management of IEEE 1588 PTP servers and clients, the company said.

With the help of TimePictra, network personnel can access information about NEs, update their configurations, conduct inventory management for any of the managed elements in the synchronization network, view performance data, check current network status and monitor events and alarms in real-time. The platform provides a rich X-windows interface which includes fully functional interactive maps, color-coded conditions and icons.

TimePictra helps carriers can monitor their IEEE 1588 sync network consisting of multiple vendors’ clients from a central location. This platform has a scalable, modular, multi-vendor architecture that evolves with the network and combines higher level systems and quickly identifying problems in a Network Operation Center environment. The platform helps service providers to be alerted about the performance degradation, the company said.

“As the only provider of a complete end-to-end PTP solution with servers, clients, global services and now full network management, Symmetricom (News - Alert) has long been leading the industry with IEEE 1588 PTP synchronization technology,” Barry Dropping, senior director, product line management at Symmetricom, said in a statement. “This management solution rounds out Symmetricom’s IEEE 1588 portfolio, enabling operators to confidently transition advanced networks to Ethernet backhaul with full end-to-end synchronization performance visibility.”

As the number of broadband services offered by the carriers’ increases, they are looking for various tools to support the new Ethernet network. Symmetricom’s management and monitoring platform delivers an important element for deploying IEEE 1588 PTP synchronization technology.

In other news, TELUS selected Symmetricom’s time and frequency solutions for a network-wide synchronization upgrade. The company equips more than 250 offices throughout Canada to support next-generation services including IPTV (News - Alert), VoIP and 3G wireless. The upgrade includes Symmetricom’s TimeHub 5500 Synchronization Supply Unit; TimeProvider for network access synchronization; TimeSource 3000 Primary Reference Source; and Symmetricom’s synchronization network management system, TimePictra.
