VoIP provider TalkFree offers IP telephony and mobile VoIP solutions targeted for underserved populations in developing countries.
To offer solutions that meet this market’s needs, the company’s turnkey, plug-and-play VoIP business-in-a-box requires no contractual obligations and only one low, start-up cost.
Earlier this year, the company reported improved performance for the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2010. With the total number of calls nearly tripled from 23.4 million to 63.9 million over the prior year - a 270 percent increase in call volume.
"Our performance in the third quarter was outstanding," Dave Rawlings, chief executive officer of TalkFree said in an announcement on the earnings. "Despite the global economic challenges, we achieved record levels of call completions, voice minutes, revenues and profits for the sixth consecutive quarter. It’s clear that our investment in mobile VoIP technology and operational excellence is producing strong results."
To find out more about the company and their success in 2010, I recently caught up with Jean Templin, director of marketing at TalkFree.

Looking back at 2010, can you highlight some of the most important advancements or trends that emerged in the market you serve? What were the key trends that impacted your business?
We noticed a significant shift in access techniques being used by our customers. Also, we saw rapid adoption of mobile dialers in our core markets replacing ATA device traffic.
What were your company’s biggest achievements/announcements in the past year?
Our most significant achievements this year were: surpassing 1.5 billion SIP-terminated voice minutes; expanding and upgrading our mobile VoIP platform to handle rapid growth quarter over quarter; integrating SMS functionality into our mobile VoIP service; and developing and rolling out our alternative payment method for resellers and customers who don’t use credit cards or PayPal (News - Alert) accounts.
How would you characterize the past year for your company?
By carefully listening to our resellers and customers, we were able to supply the products and support necessary to meet their needs in more than 70 countries and achieve record growth during a worldwide recession.
What are you planning for 2011?
For 2011, we will continue to expand our mobile dialer platform and target new segments within existing markets. We also plan to launch service in many new markets.
