Vobal Technologies Looking to Change On-Ship Telephony for the Better

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

Being connected, either through the Internet or by telephone, is an important feature for any business in a world where the business day doesn't seem to stop. There is also something to be said for being able to connect to your employees and track your assets whenever you want, instead of waiting for a certain check-in time. When it comes to being able to communicate with commercial ships, Vobal Technologies believes it has taken a big step forward with the addition of its Maritime Satellite Multi-Voice Services.

We have all seen how VoIP calling and video conferencing has changed the business landscape, but satellite telephony could actually help companies take the next step, because they won't require an Internet connection. When using VoIP, you need to either have a wireless or wired connection, but there aren't going to be a ton of those on the open seas. Cellular coverage over the ocean is also obviously suspect at best. This is why Vobal has chosen to focus on making their satellite phone coverage more affordable for businesses who are looking for the right solution.

Vobal has taken steps to allow any maritime fleet vessels that are equipped with the company's S3 Maritime GSM or S2 VoIP services to reduce their operational costs big time, when talking about telephony services. Vobal launched their S2 product in 2011 as a way for a ship's commander to separate official phone calls back to the mainland with personal calls being made by the crew.

The S2 and S3 Maritime GSM product both operate on all of the Inmarsat (News - Alert) FleetBroadband terminals and VSAT terminals without needing a bunch of pricey modifications to a ship's firmware. The products also run on systems that will actually switch between the two networks on occasion. Vobal has worked hard to make it incredibly easy and cost effective for companies to stay connected to their ships and for those on the ships to stay connected to home.

CEO and founder of Vobal, John Nix, feels that his products are one of a kind. “Vobal’s customers simply integrate Vobal On-Net technology into their corporate telephone systems and initiating a telephone call to one of their fleet vessels is as simple as dialing an office telephone extension number,” he said.
