Video to be Major Focus for Cisco 2008

By Rich Tehrani
President and Editor-in-Chief

Karen Campagna, Senior Manager, Field Marketing Programs at Cisco will be speaking at the upcoming ITEXPO (News - Alert), taking place in Miami Beach from January 23–25. I posed several questions to Campagna about the trends and technologies affecting the IP communications marketplace.

RT: What trends are you noticing in the communications market?
KC: We are seeing a major market shift from communications being all about ‘You’ —the Time person of the year for 2006 recognizing the explosion of user-generated content — to it being all about ‘Us’. There is a pervasive communications trend to personally connect with impact, any where, on any device with those in our social circle. Moreover, we are seeing the expanded use of video to create more compelling experiences. Visual networking is a new category of applications that people do when they live a Connected Life by adding video to enhance their experience.

RT: What technologies have altered the market the most?
KC: As I’ve mentioned above, video has been the most disruptive technology in recent history. Internet video accounts for 40 percent of Internet traffic today. YouTube (News - Alert) alone receives more than 65,000 new videos everyday. This explosion of professional and user-generated video content, including video for use as entertainment and communications, can now span three screens via the TV, PC and mobile phone. Visual networking is enabling video content to be transparently created, further customized, stored and delivered on a single, integrated wire-to-wireless network.

RT: What are the brightest spots in your business going forward?
KC: Clearly, video is the next wave of internet disruption, and Cisco (News - Alert) is at the forefront of this market transition. With our Digital Media team, sister companies Scientific-Atlanta and Linksys, and through our partners, we have a unique appreciation in how to make things work; how to help our customers enable The Connected Life.

RT: What will conferees learn from your ITEXPO conference session this month?
KC: In my session, I’ll explore how The Connected Life joins people to the Human Network, how Experience Providers deliver the Connected Life, and how IP NGN powers the Experience Provider. I’ll also discuss Visual Networking, as the disruptive use of video which is driving service provider IPTV (News - Alert) buildouts.

RT: Who should attend?
KC: Service Providers interested in the next Internet market transition

RT: What unique perspectives will you offer?
KC: Many provide one or two components; Cisco and our partners come together build the enable the Connected Life. We are network-centric, partnership-oriented, and focused on enabling the best possible customer experience.
