Identive a provider of identification, security and RFID products, announced a new smart card reader for Apple mobile devices. The new iAuthenticate reader lets iPad, iPhone (News - Alert) and iMac users to securely authenticate themselves to networks, websites and payment systems easily using their smart chip-based IDs or credit cards.
Louis Modell, vice president of Identive’s Identification Products division said, “Mobile computing devices are fun to use and allow people to be productive wherever they are. The popularity of the iPad in particular is creating a “bring your own device” culture as employees seek to use their personal devices to accomplish work tasks both within and outside the office.”
Using personal devices in office creates security problems for organizations that have to implement strict policies around network access to prevent security breach. Generally employee-owned devices do not have a way to read and authenticate highly secure smart card-based employee IDs.
In such cases Identive’s iAuthenticate reader enables authentication of corporate or federally-issued smart identification credentials using an Apple (News - Alert) iPad, iPhone or iMac by leveraging PKard for iOS CAC/PIV Web/E-mail app from Thursby Software Systems.
The U.S. federal government operates an expansive smart card-based ID program. As device mobility is not available for most federal workers they have to present their Common Access Card (CAC) or Personal Identification Verification (PIV) credentials to securely authenticate their identities while logging to the official network.
According to officials Identive’s new iAuthenticate reader will enable employees and contractors of the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security and other government agencies to securely log in to federal websites and Web-based accounts. They can also access E-mail and conduct collaboration activities easily and securely even when out of office.
“The iAuthenticate reader builds on the wealth of experience and technological know-how Identive has gained from delivering 20 million smart card readers and five million reader ICs. Users of Apple iOS devices now can experience this same security, ease of use and cost performance on their mobile devices,” said Dr. Manfred Mueller, executive vice president and COO Identification Products for Identive.
Identive and NXP Semiconductors NV, a provider of mixed signal and standard product solutions, are providing near field communication, or NFC, payment tags to Yeldi Softcom Pvt Ltd to support the launch of its ara eTap cashless payment application in India.
