NatureShare recently released a major update to its award-winning app, Audubon Birds - A Field Guide to North American Birds, available now on the App Store for the iPhone (News - Alert), iPod touch, iPad and iPad mini.

Company officials said the update includes optimization for the iPhone 5 and iOS 6, including native Facebook (News - Alert) integration. Additional update includes optimization for the 4-inch Retina display on iPhone 5 and iPod Touch.

The new version supports Facebook integration in iOS 6 as well.

The app, created in alliance with the National Audubon Society, now integrates with the NatureShare platform. Thanks to this integration, users can create geo-tagged bird sightings, photos and field notes.

They can also share notes with the community of outdoor enthusiasts.

In addition to creating sightings, the platform also allows users to create life lists, follow friends’ postings, tag (News - Alert) favorites, add comments and share all of it on Facebook.

“Integrating NatureShare's powerful social functionality into the Audubon Birds app allows our users to connect and interact with other birders like never before,” said Brendan Cahill, CEO at NatureShare, adding that they can now make sightings, comment on their friends’ postings and survey birding activity in the community wherever they are, in real time.

Part of the Audubon Guides mobile field guide series, Audubon Birds is touted as the first of the Audubon Guides titles to integrate the NatureShare platform. The Audubon Birds app features 820 bird species found in the United States and Canada with in-depth descriptions, range maps and information on habitat and behavior.

It also has more than 3,200 high-quality photographs and over eight hours of bird songs and calls.

“The NatureShare platform aligns with our mission to protect birds and their habitats and takes advantage of the latest technology to motivate people to experience and appreciate birds in the wild,” said David Yarnold, president of the National Audubon Society.

NatureShare is an innovative social platform for the outdoor vertical and the leading publisher of mobile applications for nature and outdoor lifestyle.

This August, Green Mountain Digital, founded in 2009, closed a $1.5-million funding round and changed its name to NatureShare.
