European iPhone Users Slowly Saying Goodbye to Texting in 2012

An interesting analysis performed by mobile telecom company Alekstra has revealed stunning results – specifically, a comparatively steep difference in SMS consumption between the U.S. and Finland. Apparently, over the course of the last eleven months – or the duration of 2012 –Finnish iPhone (News - Alert) users experienced a 20-percent decline rate this year for texting, while Americans experienced a zero-percent change.

While Americans resumed their normal texting behaviors, many are left wondering what the reason is to this sharp texting decline in Finland. Forbes reported that the statistical analysis was based on the users of the Ratemizer application, which helps iPhone owners minimize their mobile phone bills.

Forbes further theorizes that the explanation could lie in the fact that since the iPhone market penetration is significantly lower in Nordic countries than in the U.S., those using the iPhone in Finland can include more tech-savvy consumers who are more likely to ditch text-messaging than the average mobile subscriber.

Additionally, the mobile voice decline rate between the two countries seems to represent a pretty stark difference. While the annual decline rate in the U.S. is seven percent, Finland reveals an annual 12 percent decline – or a five-percent faster drop rate.

Tero Kuittinen, author of the article, even suggests that this is why big names such as AT&T and Verizon (News - Alert) have started to offer unlimited voice as a mandatory feature in their family plans, which were launched last summer.

Most chances are, we will probably be seeing this decline continue as we welcome the New Year, as well.

“Carriers know that messaging systems available on the iPhone are eroding voice consumption at a relatively rapid clip – as Apple (News - Alert) increases its handset market share, the voice erosion may accelerate in 2013 and beyond. Better to force consumers to pay for unlimited voice and label this as a great deal than offer an option for people to switch to smaller and cheaper monthly voice buckets,” Kuittinen concludes.
