Kayak, a travel search website, released a new update for the iPad and iPhone (News - Alert) app today, replacing it’s standalone iPad application and adding an itinerary-consolidation feature.
This major update puts Kayak right in the cross hairs of its competition, TripIt, another travel service that allows you to plan your entire trip within the application on your mobile device.
The updates include a new user-friendly design with a simple interface, iPad users can finally use the application to search for rental cars and book reservations, and now there is an auto-fill option that allows you to enter in all of your personal information in the settings of the app and when you decide to book a trip all of that information will be prefilled in for you.
Bill O’Donnell, Kayak’s Chief Architech, said one of the coolest features is called Trips. “It is exactly what TripIt is but better,” said O’Donnell. The new Trips feature will all you to organize all of your trip’s details (plane ticket, hotel reservations, rental car reservations, notes, directions) in one place that can be assessed from any of your iOS devices or website at any time.
O’Donnell said now you can even add pictures into your trip history. Have an important number that you wrote down on a piece of paper or the confirmation of your flight – write it down, take a picture, and add it to your Trips section. Everything will remain organized and available to you.
O’Donnell said the company is also trying out a new feature that lets you book directly through Kayak instead of being taken to other third-party sites when you do searches for deals for plane tickets and hotels.
The new application is available for download today in iTunes store. It is well designed and has generated some positive and encouraging press for Kayak. The new application will be an easy transition for any other travel application you might be previously using.
