Apple iPhone Still Ultra Popular, but Competition is Growing

It's no secret that when you are trying to determine just how popular the iPhone and more specifically the iPhone (News - Alert) 4S is, you can't measure that popularity by handsets sold.

But Apple has a distinct disadvantage against its biggest rival, Android when it comes to selling as many smartphones. While Apple only has a few models to sell, Android (News - Alert) has literally dozens of different smartphones it can peddle. Apple also has a limited number of wireless providers that it actually allows to sell its product. Android offers its product to any carrier who can afford to do so. Because of these facts, Android dominates the market share you you simply look at “Apple (News - Alert) vs. Android.” Where you need to look to truly understand just how popular the iPhone truly is, is how many want or wish they had one.

A new survey from ChangeWave Research shows that among the 4,000 people they surveyed, there is still a pretty safe majority who favor the iPhone. Among the people who are looking to buy a new smartphone, 54 percent said that they are planning on getting an iPhone. What is interesting is that while that number is actually down from 65 percent since the company did their last survey in September it still has iPhone in the lead by a large margin.

While the iPhone is still leading the market in what kinds of phones are most wanted, Android does appear to be closing the distance. Part of the reason for this is of course, there are just so many Android phones, that a company can find lightning in a bottle and rocket in popularity for a few weeks or months.

Meanwhile, people know what to expect when it comes to what's coming with the iPhone. Of course, the iPhone 4S brought the Siri personal assistant, which in turn brought a resurgence in popularity. There are companies, like Samsung (News - Alert) which are starting to make a name for themselves when it comes to putting out a more popular Android phone. It is possible that the drop in popularity, despite still easily being king of the hill could mean there is an opening against Apple.
