AdMob (News - Alert), a mobile advertising marketplace that serves more than 3.5 billion mobile banner and text ads per month, reportedly has launched its August 2008 AdMob Mobile Metrics Report, in which it highlights the rapid and global growth of smartphone usage.

The report says that the growth in smartphone use is likely to continue throughout the year, marked by the anticipated launch of new smartphones in the coming months, including the first of Google’s (News - Alert) Android phones, the RIM Bold, and the Nokia N96.

During the last month, the Apple (News - Alert) iPhone was the fastest-growing device in the world, which ended August with more than 2.9 million requests per day, while smartphones accounted for 25.8 percent of worldwide traffic in August, which is up by 3.4 percent since May 2008, says the report.

The report further says that BlackBerry Pearl, Palm Centro, BlackBerry Curve, Apple iPhone, and Samsung (News - Alert) Instinct were the top five smartphones in the United States during August, all of which together generated 12.9 percent of all US traffic, a 2.4 percent increase over July.

As far as the worldwide smartphone traffic in August is concerned, Nokia accounts for 62.4 percent share, with more than 50 percent in every region except North America, as Nokia does not even have a top 20 ranked smartphone in the United States.

According to the AdMob report, RIM ranks second worldwide with 10.8 percent of overall smartphone traffic, and a large majority of that comes from North America. RIM has got a 31.2 percent of smartphone traffic in the United States and manufactures three of the top 10 devices in the nation, leading the market in the United States. The Smartphones traffic in the United States increased to 23.7 percent of total traffic in August, which is up by 3.5 percent since May 2008.

None of Motorola and Sony Ericcson has a smartphone ranked in the top 20 worldwide, although both of them have a large share of overall mobile traffic, the report indicates.
