Survey by Reveals Increase in Mobile Internet Adoption

This report is based on surveys conducted in March with 3,305 online consumers with mobile phones in the U.S. The survey concluded that online consumers have made considerable progress in Web-enabled phone adoption and mobile Internet usage.
More than half of the online consumers (58 percent) owned a mobile phone with Internet connectivity. Among the consumers with Web-enabled phones, 21 percent had a smartphone, 8 percent owned an iPhone (News - Alert) and 29 percent some other type of Web-enabled phone. The rest owned non-Web-enabled phones with only voice and text service plans.
The study found that the iPhone launch has made Web-enabled phones very popular resulting in 75 percent more online consumers buying their first Web-enabled phone in 2007. The purchase of Web-enabled phones continued even up to first quarter of 2009 in spite of the present economic downturn.
Online shoppers are now increasingly becoming mobile Internet shoppers using their Web-enabled phones to maximum advantage. Mobile devices help them purchase online, compare prices and also research product details and specifications. Among them 58 percent have purchased digital content for their phone, 51 percent have bought consumer electronics and 37 percent computers besides similar numbers on books and clothing.
Smartphone and iPhone owners seem to be using the mobile Internet to shop, with most of them already comparing prices online with their mobile phones.
