Be Happy with the Live Happy App for iPhone and iPod Touch

Who wouldn’t want to learn the secret to being happy, pretty much, all the time. To always be smiling and chipper, maybe chipper enough to stop and actually smell the roses, instead of the coffee. Even though, I’m not sure if smelling coffee has a negative connection to it, but for this review, why not.

A new application found in the iTunes store, called Live Happy, promotes ones well-being by providing “happiness-boosting” techniques. A “first-of-its-kind” application, it guides users through various daily activities that have been scientifically proven to boost ones short and long term happiness.
Based on research by Dr. Sonja Lyubomirsky, from her book, “The How of Happiness: A New Approach to Getting the Life You Want,” the application was developed by Signal Patterns’s SP Labs.
"Many families and individuals are facing anxiety about events that have impacted their lives -- such as a lost job, lost home or smaller nest egg. And with the entire country talking about the economic crisis, the stress can even affect those who may not be facing immediate economic hardships," said Ran Zilca, CEO of Signal Patterns. "The Live Happy application is a comprehensive program based on decades of cutting-edge positive psychology research. It's about sustaining a positive outlook, developing emotional resiliency and stability, and even flourishing amidst life's pressures."

The Live Happy app is for both the iPhone (News - Alert) and iPod Touch. Users can download a free version that supports a limited number of activities. For those who want to continue their Live Happy program can purchase the app for $6.99.
The paid version includes unlimited activities and the "Ask Sonja" feature where people may send questions to Dr. Lyubomirsky.
"Going about life in a way that makes us happier is a skill that can be acquired and mastered when we consciously choose to commit and work at it on a daily basis. It's similar to the way a physical exercise program involves small individual tasks like lifting weights or running that add up to a healthier and more efficient body," says Lyubomirsky.
"By creating an application for the iPhone and iPod, we've made it easy for anyone to follow this research-based program wherever they are, and follow the simple daily activities that can bring about a new positive perspective," Lyubomirsky adds.
The Live Happy app helps people boost their overall happiness by following simple activities that include:
  1. Goal Setting/Evaluating/Tracking
  2. Expressing Gratitude Directly
  3. Keeping a Gratitude Journal
  4. Replaying Happy Days
  5. Keeping a Savoring Photo Album
  6. Envisioning Your Best Possible Self
  7. Nurturing Relationships
  8. Remembering Acts of Kindness
The menu, with a happy face in the center and gold and red rays coming out of it, has six circles options, Savor, Social, Strive, Explore, Thank and Optimism. Pressing the Savor option, for example, you’ll come to a brief explanation about how remembering past happy events it can help “savor” the moment and remember that feeling that you felt.
There is also a section to upload photos of happy moments in the “Savoring Album,” for users to go back to and help complete that activity.
Although, this application my sound a bit of a soul searching or new age type of method, simple exercises like these are indeed known to help emotionally. One could say that this app helps by the power of suggestion and/or the power of the mind.
Either way, it’s not a bad application for one looking to gain happiness with simple and quick activities that can be done sporadically during the day. In the end, no matter what’s getting you down, don’t worry, be happy.
