“To protect and to serve,” these words carry much meaning across the country. While the last year has not displayed an optimal relationship between the police and the public, these brave men and women do what they can to keep order. However, when technology does not want to participate in the process, problems can pop up at a rapid rate, which is why after LAPD desk phones went out in Februray, and recent outages in the city’s 311 system, there was a call for a phone system upgrade.

Looking to replace its legacy system, the Los Angeles Police Department selected a future-forward VoIP system to suit its needs. The rollout begins in Van Nuys, with Foothill, Devonshire and Granada Hills to follow not far behind. The first four upgrades will begin this summer, with an expectation of completion by June 2018.

Between those four stations alone are over 1,000 desk phones, opening the opportunity to add feature-rich IP phones to improve communication and collaboration. There is nearly $650,000 set aside for the modernization project. That includes training as well as a complete system upgrade.

There are an additional nine stations using the legacy phone system, which should receive system upgrades by 2020. So when it’s time to protect and serve, law enforcement can get to the task at hand.

VoIP is a reliable, cost-effective option for the city of Los Angeles – and your business too! Just remember that it is far more than simply selecting an exceptional communications system. Endpoints matter and can define the communications experience. So, after you select a VoIP service provider, make sure to measure twice so you only have to cut once when it comes to your IP endpoints.

Whether it’s Joe Friday on the beat or Axel Foley in town looking into a murder…give them the tools to capture the culprit and put the bad guys away.

Time to protect and serve.
