TeliaSonera Deploys Verimatrix Video Content Authority System

By Nathesh, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Verimatrix (News - Alert) Video Content Authority System (VCAS) is being deployed by TeliaSonera. They will be using VCAS for IPTV services in the Nordic region, Estonia and Lithuania. Telia Digital-TV offers programming packages that include 70 channels, such as Discovery and the Disney Channel and a 24-hour on-demand library of movies. However, commercial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

TeliaSonera (News - Alert) is a telecommunications company in the Nordic and Baltic region, with positions within mobile communications in Eurasia, Turkey and Russia. Verimatrix deals in software-based content security and revenue enhancement technologies in pay-TV networks, with a customer base of telecommunications providers.

VCAS was designed for two-way and hybrid networks to protect content and enhance revenue streams, while combating digital piracy wherever it occurs within the distribution chain.

Janne Yli, the senior vice president and head of TV, Content and Digital Home, TeliaSonera, commented, "We needed a content security solution that we could install quickly and cost-effectively, and given our rapidly-growing subscriber base, it had to have proven scalability. There's no question Verimatrix can deliver iron-clad security for our broadcast and on-demand content. Plus, we were impressed with their ease of integration with our existing platform components."

"Our latest deployment with TeliaSonera is a testament to our product innovation and customer care support that enables us to easily respond to their content security needs," said Steve Oetegenn, chief sales and marketing officer, Verimatrix. "Telia Digital-TV is helping to advance IPTV (News - Alert) services throughout Europe as they continue to deploy leading-edge technologies."

Verimatrix has claimed that their VCAS for IPTV is well-suited to accommodate Telia Digital-TV’s 300,000-plus subscribers and also the software-based solution eliminates the vulnerabilities related to smart card-based architectures.

Through the influence of established and verified two-way Internet security protocols, a Public Key Infrastructure public/private key pair system and X.509 digital certificates, the downloadable solution is not only more secure, it enables low-cost set-top box or client device hardware.
