OrbitalCom Announces IPTV 'Multimedia' Compression Technology

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Orbital Multi Media Holdings Corporation, a communications network provider, will reportedly unveil its Quiptel multimedia network at INTERNIX EXPO on July 17th, in Cape Town, South Africa.

Stan Capiak, director of OrbitalCom, said that Quiptel will create an unparalleled ability to deliver fully interactive content using less than 50 percent of current bandwidth requirements. He observed that the current industry standards require 1 to 10 megabits/second per video stream, and the delivery of this amount of bandwidth to an end-user is not a reality for the majority of Internet users.

Orbital’s proprietary technology reduces the bandwidth requirement to deliver dynamic content without sacrificing video and audio quality. The company claims that compression technology will allow operators to deliver video to a cellular phone, or portable hand unit at a remarkable 32 kbs. Capiak said that anyone with a DSL Internet connection can thus access full multimedia services.

A fiber optic line to the house is no longer required when using Quiptel technology, according to company officials who add that a wireless Internet Service Provider can provide a broader array of services and still keep consumer costs down.

The Quiptel IPTV set-top box can deliver videos on-demand, live TV, pay-per-view music, live music, music on-demand, concerts, interactive games and advertising. Capiak added that Quiptel technology offers several possibilities such as a user watching a sporting event can pick up the remote and place an order for takeout food via the TV. He can even pay with a credit card.

The online video rental business will change dramatically with this technology as business owners can deliver a secure digital copy to an end-user anywhere in the world, on demand. These are only few examples and according to Capiak, the possibilities with Quiptel technology are limited only to the subscriber's imagination.

Quiptel provides a self-contained, turnkey automated system to operators. The solution is dynamically built with full account management, multi-platform billing, automated compression, formatting, and secure SSL content management and protection. All these features are combined with a per-user deployment cost well below current industry standards. Because the device is fully encrypted using SSL, content providers are assured of copyright protection.
