Harmonic Intends to Redefine IPTV Delivery

By Mae Kowalke, TMCnet Senior Editor

Harmonic (News - Alert) is on a mission to redefine how IPTV is delivered. The company’s portfolio now includes solutions for compression, stream processing, content preparation, on-demand software, and ad/video servers.

This broad range of products will be on display next week at the IPTV (News - Alert) World show in London. The company is focusing its efforts on marketing to IPTV services providers of all types (put especially telcos) by offering products that have the potential to generate incremental revenue.

In particular, Harmonic will be highlighting the following product lines:

  • DiviCom Electra 7000 encoder for high-def MPEG-4 AVC video.
  • A hybrid headend that uses H.264 video encoded by the company’s Electra 5400 and Ion AVC systems.
  • The MediaPrism suite of content preparation tools.
  • ProStream 8000 for compilations of multi-channel H.264 mosaics.
  • Integrated ad insertion using the company’s ProStream 2000 splicer, StreamLiner 2000 ad server and MediaPrism for ingest and overlay.
“Telco IPTV deployments continue to expand, and IP-based cable service delivery is gaining momentum,” commented Thierry Fautier, director of telco solutions at Harmonics, in a statement. “Harmonic has pioneered IP video delivery with the first fully native IP product line available, and supports the leading IPTV service operators around the world in provisioning superior quality TV. Harmonic offers tools to deliver new applications in an IP environment such as live targeted advertising, Mosaic viewer interfaces as well as on-demand content delivery.”

Also at the show, Harmonic will be demonstrating its Rhozet business unit featuring the Carbon Coder universal transcoder.

“One of the key challenges facing IPTV providers is the conversion of film and television content from its original form into the required delivery format,” said David Trescot (News - Alert), vice president of Harmonic's Rhozet business unit, in a statement. “Rhozet provides transcoding software that allows for the large-scale conversion of tens of thousands of hours of content from any format into any needed IPTV format.”
