NEC (
News -
Alert) Corporation, a global provider of network solutions to enterprises, service providers and government agencies, is getting in on the IPTV

market in a big way: The Japan-based, multinational conglomerate, which has been a key player in the communications services market since the early 1900s, will soon be launching a full suite of end-to-end IPTV solutions for service providers.
As per a company
press release, these IPTV solutions will cover the full gamut -- from network architecture to delivery servers and household terminals. For these network solutions the company is utilizing a "Full Line Full Layer" approach, which will make it easier for service providers to guarantee the Quality of Service (QoS

), Quality of Experience (QoE) and advanced security.
Central to this suite of IPTV solutions the release of the new NC7500-VD video delivery server (VoD server), which will offer continuous video-on-demand services with carrier-grade reliability. The server, which will be introduced in April, will act as the core of NEC’s new IPTV solution set. It will offer built-in security for video content, including functions which will protect against piracy, and thus will safeguard intellectual property rights.
As part of the overall solution, NEC is adopting CASCADE’s “QualiTVision” middleware solution, which has enabled IPTV deployments in Hong Kong and Thailand to offer such advanced video solutions as time shifting, Network PVR and interactive services.
NEC says it has drawn heavily on its “NGN know-how and extensive experience with broadcasting technology” to bring these competitive IPTV solutions to market. The company is hoping that these solutions will generate more than 50 billion yen in sales by 2010.
“IPTV is a video delivery service that uses the IP

network,” Dr. Botaro Hirosaki, Executive Vice President of NEC, stated matter-of-factly in a press release. “With the addition of NGN we can provide a variety of services, including high-grade video-on-demand (VoD) and value-added information services.”
Hirosaki added that NEC will be expanding it support and services to help meet carrier demands for its new IPTV solutions. These next-generation IPTV solutions, he said, will facilitate smooth migration for carriers to an “advanced service architecture incorporating NGN capabilities” based on “our extensive technical achievements in broadcasting with our core competence in the area of IT/Network integration.”
NEC will be showcasing its new IPTV solutions at the “IPTV World Forum 2008,” to be held March 12-14 in London.
NEC and Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert) Partner to Develop LTE Wireless Broadband Access Solutions
In other news, NEC
announced today that it has forged a new partnership with Alcatel-Lucent to develop and bring to market new, advanced end-to-end communications solutions. As the first step in this collaboration, the two companies have decided to form a joint venture that will focus on the development of Long Term Evolution (LTE (

Alert)) wireless broadband access solutions. These solutions will support the network evolution of leading customers around the world, such as NTT DoCoMo, which already selected NEC as a vendor for commercial service deployment of its Super 3G

(LTE) project, and Verizon (

Alert), which has also initiated a LTE trial program with NEC.
Although the two companies have agreed to jointly work on a LTE product strategy and platform, it is really more of a partnership between their R&D divisions, which will pool together their expertise and resources to develop new wireless broadband access solutions based on multiple input/multiple output (MIMO

) and orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) technologies. The two companies will continue to manage delivery, project execution and dedicated support to their respective customers independently. In other words, they will each be responsible for integrating the new LTE technology they develop into the existing W-CDMA/HSPA and CDMA/EV-DO networks of their respective customers.
“Through this joint development effort, Alcatel-Lucent and NEC are affirming their R&D investment commitments and combining them to accelerate product innovation, differentiation and performance,” a press release from NEC states. “The goal of the two companies is to achieve faster commercial availability of LTE solutions, serve an expanded, global customer base, and establish a leading position in the early development phase of the LTE market.”
The fruits of this new partnership won’t be realized until 2009.
