ChangHong has picked NXP Semiconductors’ latest highly-integrated, low-cost set-top box (STB) solution, STB222 to deliver AVS (News - Alert)-compliant IP
STB platform to manufacturers and Pay TV operators in Asia.
ChangHong provides the AVS (Audio Video Coding Standard) decoder technology to enable high-quality video over IP networks. This helps it to deliver a better viewing experience for consumers through the enjoyment of services such as video-on-demand, recording and pausing live TV, and enhanced interactive services.
Executive Vice President & General Manager, Home Business Unit, NXP Semiconductors (News - Alert), Christos Lagomichos said in a statement that ChangHong’s proven AVS technology fits perfectly with NXP’s focus on delivering more digital content with superior picture quality and an anytime, anywhere entertainment experience to consumers.
According to Lagomichos, the flexibility of NXP’s STB222 to support multiple advanced video codecs without the need for external DSPs makes for a cost-effective platform for manufacturers, as STB adoption picks up pace in Asian markets. This enables easy and quick deployment for a wide range of set-top box environments.
En’yang Zhang, director of Technology Center, ChangHong pointed out that NXP’s set-top box platforms with ChangHong’s AVS technology have already proven highly reliable and flexible in field trials with major operators in China, and the STB222 delivers an edge in cost-efficiency - essential to drive the adoption of IPTV
in Asia.
Zhang expressed his company’s excitement about their joint development initiatives with NXP to bring leading edge picture quality and advanced multi-format video capabilities to more and more consumers around the world.
The STB222 is a flexible, advanced platform targeting IP, Digital TV and hybrid set-top boxes that has the ability to support advanced video standards, including MPEG-4AVC, H264, VC-1 and MPEG-2. Also, the optional HDMI support enables standard-definition (SD) content to be up-scaled to 1080p. The STB222’s dual channel support allows the easy creation of hybrid IP STB solutions, combining the IP channel with terrestrial, satellite or cable DVB
reception.
NXP Semiconductors recently launched a highly-integrated silicon tuner – TDA18252HN – with multi-standard digital cable reception addressing the domestic Chinese set-top box (STB) market. The TDA18252HN will offer tremendous cost savings and performance efficiencies to manufacturers and operators.
