Broadcast International Hires New SVP to Head CodecSys Video Compression Software Division

By Arvind Arora, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Broadcast International (News - Alert) recently appointed Ron Bell as its new Senior Vice President and General Manager for the company’s CodecSys Division. In his new role, Bell will oversee the evolution of the company's CodecSys software.

Bell holds a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering and a master’s in computer science from the University of Utah, and completed management training programs at the Wharton School of Business. Bell has led and participated in many industry programs to identify technology directions, establish consortiums and research cooperatives and identify standards for various companies.

In addition to a career at Unisys and his most recent post at MathStar (News - Alert), Bell was formerly Chief Executive Officer at Equator Technologies, and Vice President and General Manager for both the Consumer Products Division and the Computer Products Division at LSI Logic.

CodecSys enables video providers to reduce their bandwidth needs more than 80 percent for high-definition (HD) quality, and pack more video onto less bandwidth — a key capability in the broadcast, cable, satellite, mobile and IPTV markets.

Broadcast International’s CodecSys provides a software-based approach to video compression. It performs live video encoding under 3Mbps with HD quality, by automatically selecting the codec best-suited for a particular frame or video sequence from an entire library of specialized codecs, thus eliminating the chokepoints that plague other compression solutions.

One of the benefits of the CodecSys software approach is that its video encoders can be easily be changed as standards and requirements evolve, using cost-effective software downloads.

Rod Tiede, CEO at Broadcast International, commented that the company is pleased to have Bell on board. He noted that the quality and potential of CodecSys software is well known, and under Bell's direction the company expects to take CodecSys to the next level, breaking new ground in the exploding video technology market.

Bell himself commented that the video industry, including cable, wireless and IPTV (News - Alert), is one of today's most exciting technology arenas. CodecSys, he said, has already emerged as a breakthrough product.
