Globecomm Readies to Demo IPTV Solutions

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Presenting a range of technologies to “future-proof” television distribution systems, Globecomm Systems (News - Alert) announced that it will be demoing its solutions at National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) show this week Las Vegas.

During its presentation at the show, Globecomm will feature video content streaming to TVs, PCs and mobile devices as well as middleware able to deliver IPTV and Internet-direct video to set-top box (STB). Along with the demonstrations of ready-to-install technologies, the compahy will present “sneak peeks” of advanced video architectures.

“Working with Inlet Technologies (News - Alert), we believe we are delivering one of the world's best video quality to Internet and handheld devices,” said Tom Parish, Vice President of Broadcast Technologies for Globecomm, in a statement. “For IPTV (News - Alert), we believe in an open-standard based solution that seamlessly merges IPTV with fast-growing internet-direct video content.”

There will also be a second demonstration where the company will showcase its capacity to integrate IPTV video and "over the top" or Internet-direct video to a STB. Globecomm will achieve this with the help of advanced middleware and conditional access systems. To facilitate the anticipated features in the next generation of STBs, the company has modified an off-the-shelf STB, which will be demonstrated in the show. Ensuring the quick and inexpensive adaption to continued advances in the field, the Globecomm solution is based on open standards.

Globecomm has also developed an architecture to convert video into a wide variety of formats. This can be achieved at many different bit rates and formats for live or file-based applications. The architecture will be introduced at the 2008 NAB show, presented as an essential approach to "future-proofing" new facilities and creating new revenue opportunities for legacy content.
