High Demand for Multimedia Home Networking Devices in IPTV Services

By Nathesh, TMCnet Contributing Editor

HomePNA (News - Alert) (Home Phoneline Networking Alliance) announced that it has shipped its 5 millionth HomePNA 3.1 chipset and has prided itself for being able to supply to the high demand for its multimedia home networking devices in IPTV service deployments.

The number is up from 2 million less than six months ago. The purpose of HomePNA 3.1 is to integrate operation over coax cables to maximize the networking abilities and to overcome some restrictions of phone jack location.

HomePNA is an incorporated, non-profit association of companies working together to promote adoption of networking industry standards using existing home wiring.

Telephone companies worldwide such as AT&T (News - Alert), Canada’s Aliant and Portugal’s Sonaecom are now installing HomePNA. With almost 30 certified products, HomePNA offers service providers more certified products that operate over coaxial cable than any other standard.

"These chipset orders show the strong enthusiasm for the well-adopted home networking standard. Featuring a data rate of 320 megabits per second, HomePNA delivers the highest speed available and guaranteed quality of service needed to distribute high-definition IPTV (News - Alert) and other IP-based services," said Rich Nesin, president of HomePNA. "Millions of chipsets have been shipped in certified products including IP set-top boxes, residential gateways, bridges, ONTs and test equipment for IPTV deployments."

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU), an organization established to standardize and regulate international radio and telecommunications, has approved HomePNA for a critical technical specification for a single, worldwide standard for high performance multimedia home phoneline networking. HomePNA 3.1 is the only one to have such an approval. It is also one of the local area network (LAN) interfaces included in the DSL Forum's TR-069 family of Broadband Home global recommendations.

HomePNA 3.1 is the first of a new generation of home networking standards developed for new "entertainment" applications such as IPTV which require consistent high performance over the entire house.

This type of technology, which provides advanced features such as guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS), is being used today by major service providers for commercial "triple play" (video, voice and data) service offerings. HomePNA 3.1 uses frequencies above those used for DSL, ISDN, and voice calls over phone wires and below those used for broadcast and direct broadcast satellite (DBS) TV over coax so it can coexist with those services on the same wires.

The advantages of HomePNA are that the required hardware is inexpensive and reliable triple play multimedia networking services are efficiently provided by these chipsets. The technology helps service providers to reduce installation costs, utilize remote management and diagnostics to reduce operational expenses, and even reduce end-user costs through unified billing.
