TVN Invests Millions for Research and Development

By Nathesh, TMCnet Contributing Editor

An announcement from TVN Entertainment Corporation stated that they are investing $28 million on technology, infrastructure and business related activities. This will go well with their new advanced suite of file based delivery services. The new investment will also enable them to expand their research and development, and increase storage and distribution capacity.

TVN Entertainment Corporation is a digital content aggregation, management, distribution, and service company that deliver Video-On-Demand (VOD) to millions of viewers through their Telco, Cable, and Broadband partners.

The company claims that the research and development will focus largely on fulfilling the growing needs of distributors and content providers especially on advanced interactive menus. They recently introduced an interactive VOD management tool through which programmers can make menu changes and update metadata fields, such as price and end-dates, based on actual consumption patterns.

The company noted the need for increasing their storage facilities. They manage over 8,300 hours of VOD content each month, up almost 50 percent from this time last year.

For this kind of growth, TVN recently brought online an additional 40 terabytes of near-line storage to inventory over 23,500 hours of new VOD content. This includes TVN-licensed movie titles, children's and Spanish language content, and genre-themed on-demand channels as well as delivering Subscription-Video-On-Demand (SVOD) and network programming for many of the major cable networks.

Content is made available in a variety of formats including SD and HD, MPEG2, MPEG4 (H.264), and Windows Media (VC1). For this they added a third transponder to support distribution of multiple on-demand formats including MPEG4, and a dramatic increase in HD VOD content packages.

"The VOD market continues to reward innovation and enhanced capabilities for file-based delivery services," said Doug Sylvester, chief operating officer of TVN Entertainment. "We see exciting opportunities to create, acquire, and invest in the sophisticated tools and services that our distributors and content providers have come to expect from TVN".

TVN also offers the only single-source management and distribution solution for VOD, including content aggregation, packaging, encoding, asset management and transport via satellite to all video service providers. The Emmy nominated ADONISS 2, TVN’ Asset Management and Distribution platform with open-standard interfaces is compatible with CableLabs (News - Alert) 1.0, 1.1, and 2.0. ADONISS 2 is fully integrated with Motorola, Scientific Atlanta, TV Guide, TV Gateway, Myrio, Broadbus, CCOR, SeaChange, Concurrent, Tandberg (News - Alert), and a variety of other VOD systems.

In order to accommodate the growth of the company and its services, TVN soon plans to relocate its headquarters to a new 30,000 square foot facility, doubling its current space. The company said that it also anticipates expanding its staff to support these investment initiatives.
