ZyXEL Showcases SIP, IPTV Products

By Greg Galitzine, Group Editorial Director

ZyXEL Communications (News - Alert) had a rather busy week, having announced a series of new products for service providers.

To begin with the company announced a wireless gateway (the P-660HNU series 802.11n ADSL2/2+ wireless gateway) and a new IPTV capable set-top box (STB-1001).

The ZyXEL P-660HNU, is an all-in-one high-speed 802.11n wireless ADSL2/2+ gateway. With speeds up to 12 Mbps (ADSL2) or 24 Mbps (ADSL2/2+), the P-660HNU Series offers an increase in speed over many competitive offerings. In addition to a 4-port switch and a robust firewall, the P-660HNU features a USB 2.0 host for FAT16 and FAT32 file sharing and print server capabilities allowing multiple PCs in a home to share one printer.

The ZyXEL STB-1001 IPTV (News - Alert) set-top box is designed to enable telcos to increase ARPU while lowering both capex and opex. The device features strong digital rights management (DRM) support with Macrovision and CA (News - Alert) for content protection, MPEG-1/2/4 with H.264SD comprehensive (audio video) AV Codec support, and IGMP, SNMP, and TR-069 multicasting support.

ZyXEL reports that the STB-1001 is supported by leading IPTV middleware providers and solution providers in the global IPTV ecosystem.

The company also announced a pair of Broadcom (News - Alert)-based VDSL2 line cards — the VLC1324G-51, 24-port and VLC1348G-51, 48-port (double-density). The cards are among the first to offer ADSL2/2+ fall back capability.

The new cards are designed for telcos using VDSL2 technologies for higher bandwidth applications in fiber-to-the-node/neighborhood (FTTN) scenarios. According to the company, the cards support up to 100Mbps with up to seven different profiles that allow service providers to configure ports based on different service offerings.

Perhaps one of the key benefits of the new offering from ZyXEL is its ability to extend the loop distance out to 19,000 feet. The ADSL2/2+ fall back enables service providers to offer different services to different customers using the same line card, depending on varying distance and bandwidth requirements.

Last but not least, ZyXEL showcased a SIP-Based WiFi Camera, the V750W.

This device is designed to enable users to monitor their home or business remotely in real time for complete security, and features an external sensor/alarm, motion detection capabilities and a passive-infrared sensor.

As with most ZyXEL products, the V750W is geared towards carriers, giving them an increasingly popular value-added service, which they can in turn offer to their customers in order to generate recurring revenue.

Each camera has a unique phone number, which users dial into to gain control of the device. Once dialed in, users can control the pan, tilt, and digital zoom functions. The V750W also features LED lamps, which allow users to illuminate their field of view for monitoring situations that may exist in less than ideal lighting situations.
