Comtrend Implements Sigma's HomePNA Chipset for Broadband In-Home Networking

By Ashok Bindra, TMCnet Contributor

To provide users with the most efficient and cost-effective broadband home networking solution, Comtrend Corp. is using Sigma Designs’ HomePNA chipset in its NexusLink VDSL2 bonding gateway. According to Comtrend (News - Alert), the HomePNA chipset enables the NexusLink to deliver a single-box solution for triple-play services with double the bandwidth performance of traditional VDSL2 devices at 1/20th the cost of fiber deployments.

In a company statement, John Castreje, general manager for Comtrend North America, said “Our NexusLink VDSL2 bonding gateway is a key technology for our customers who want to deliver high-speed services across long distances, and from a central office.”

Comtrend said the NexusLink VDSL2 bonding gateway is starting customer trials this quarter. Although, customers started making the switch to VDSL2 during the last few quarters, the bonding gateway is the next step in delivering advanced triple-play play services, added Comtrend. According to the maker, Sigma’s high performance HomePNA (News - Alert) solution provides all the bandwidth these next generation solutions require.

In addition, HomePNA also offers remote management capabilities with support for the worldwide DSL standard TR-069. This worldwide DSL standard, led by the Broadband Forum (News - Alert), ensures remote management of consumer premises equipment. Consequently, with support for TR-069, Comtrend and other networking solution providers have remote access for management of products such as residential gateways and set-top boxes.

Gabi Hilevitz, vice president and general manager, Home Connectivity Group at Sigma Designs (News - Alert), said “Sigma has a history of delivering products that enable its customers to create cutting-edge solutions for their customer base. The combination of Comtrend’s innovative VDSL2 bonding solution and our high-performance home networking HomePNA technology is a prime example of this.” He added, “By dramatically reducing IPTV (News - Alert) installation costs, HomePNA has become a must-have technology for telcos deploying triple-play services.”

According to Comtrend, VDSL2 bonding presents service providers with another great opportunity to take advantage of the existing copper in use today. Brian Nickell, senior product manager for Comtrend North America said. “With fiber deployment costs still relatively high, utilizing existing copper to deliver advanced triple play services is increasingly important. VDSL2 bonding will continue to keep costs low for providers while meeting the bandwidth requirements for next generation services.”
