IPTV: Broadcast TV via PC Graphics Add-in Cards

By Jayashree Adkoli, TMCnet Contributor

In an effort to deliver broadcast TV via PC graphics add-in cards, Mirics collaborated with SAPPHIRE Technology Ltd., a provider of add-in graphics cards for PCs. This partnership will enable a technology that will facilitate users to turn their PC into a receiver and home hub for digital terrestrial TV.

Precisely, users will be able to watch broadcast high definition television “HDTV” on their PCs. With the recent partnership between Mirics and SAPPHIRE, Miric’s FlexiTV will be integrated with SAPPHIRE’s add-in graphics cards.

According to Mirics, its FlexiTV is the world’s first commercial software-based global TV receiver. It is software demodulation-based platform that delivers cost effective global standards broadcast receiver. It combines the company’s silicon front-end (MSi3101) with Mirics’ processor-efficient demodulator algorithms. Its algorithms replicate the complete functionality of silicon demodulators, similar to OFDM demodulation and error correction.

FlexiTV is a complete hardware and software solution that is compatible with Microsoft (News - Alert) Windows 7, XP and Vista operating systems, and in addition supports Microsoft's Media Center player.

Both, Mirics and SAPPHIRE, will demonstrate FlexiTV-enabled graphics cards at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES) suites.

At the CES (News - Alert), both the companies will demonstrate graphics add-in cards coupled with Mirics FlexiTV and FlexiStream. In addition, both the companies will demonstrate PCs equipped with SAPPHIRE graphics cards receiving live standard definition (SD) and high definition (HD) content from broadcast sources and relayed, using Mirics’ FlexiStream software, from FlexiTV-equipped PCs in Europe and Asia.

Mirics’ FlexiStream facilitates users to stream content between PCs within the home or via the Internet. This will enable viewing of favorite broadcast channels while away from home.

SAPPHIRE Technology manufactures graphics solutions based on AMD (News - Alert) Technology. The company also manufactures a range of PC and integrated main boards.

In the recent news, Mirics partnered with ArcSoft (News - Alert) to combine its FlexiTV with ArcSoft TotalMedia 3.5 to provide PC users with HD content. This content is broadcast free-to-air or FTA over the region and will enable viewers in Latin America to watch broadcast high definition television (HDTV) on their PCs.
